NSW 'can lead world' in medicinal cannabis

There is no reason why NSW can't lead the world in developing a system for supplying medicinal cannabis, Premier Mike Baird says.

At a symposium in Tamworth on Friday, Mr Baird flagged three clinical trials of medicinal cannabis, saying they wouldn't be confined to the terminally ill.

The announcement follows the decision by his government last month to decriminalise the usage of cannabis by terminally ill patients.

"There is no reason why NSW can't lead the world... we have the research and we've got the opportunity to build the application," he said.

The conference was organised by local resident Lucy Haslam, whose terminally ill son Daniel made a personal plea to Mr Baird in July to legalise medicinal cannabis.

"I believe he genuinely supports this," Mr Haslam, 24, told AAP after the meeting.

The government is yet to provide details of any pending studies.

A full report from the state working group into the regulation of such schemes is expected by the the end of the year.

Other states and the Commonwealth have also thrown their support behind the trials.
