Wagga Wagga residents can begin preparing for a by-election after disgraced NSW MP Daryl Maguire finally resigned from parliament.

Mr Maguire, who was caught up in a corruption scandal last month, had pledged to quit before MPs returned from the winter break on August 7 following pressure from the public and colleagues.

His resignation on Friday came three weeks after damning taped phone conversations of him discussing potential commissions from a property deal were played at the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

The long-time Liberal backbencher stepped down from his role as parliamentary secretary and quit the Liberal party moments after fronting ICAC on July 13.

He was paid almost $10,000 in the three weeks between the hearing and his resignation from parliament.

The Liberals are yet to preselect a candidate for the upcoming by-election.

Local councillor Dan Hayes will stand for Labor at the poll.
