NSW boy, 7, awarded for triple-zero call

When seven-year-old Kallan Carson watched his father collapse and convulse on the floor of their rural NSW home, he knew exactly what to do.

The young boy quickly dialled triple zero in a call that helped save his dad's life.

"My daddy's just had, I don't know what it's called ... he just started shaking," he told ambulance operator Greg Shirley from his Buxton home, southwest of Sydney.

"He was leaning on me. Now he's on the ground."

The seven-year-old remained calm as he followed Mr Shirley's instructions, while his four-year-old sister Bronte also kept her cool.

Their actions have earned them Star Awards from the NSW Ambulance, which recognised their efforts in a ceremony at Buxton Public School on Friday.

Mr Shirley praised the boy for giving good directions and gathering his father Owen's belongings before he was loaded on to an ambulance.

"His courage was extremely admirable," he said.

"The information he provided helped us provide the right kind of care for his father."

Proud mum Carla Carson said she never expected the kids would have to make the call, because their father had led an active lifestyle despite suffering from a brain tumour.

"You don't expect a seven-year-old to handle it so well. He's always been confident though," she told AAP.

"He was proud of how his sister handled it. He was more happy for her."

The award was also an opportunity to teach other young children the importance of calling triple zero in an emergency, she said.
