No bail bid by Wagga teen murder accused

A man is behind bars accused of murdering a NSW school student in an apparently targeted crime that has shocked the state's Riverina community.

Bryce Cliff appeared by video-link in Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday charged over the death of a Year 11 student whose body was found in a home in the suburb of Kooringal about 8pm on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old had suffered multiple stab wounds, according to police.

"This was not a random incident," Acting Superintendent Andrew Spliet told reporters on Wednesday.

Cliff, 29, has also been charged with aggravated break-and-enter and taking and driving a conveyance without consent and did not apply for bail, which was formally refused by Magistrate Erin Kennedy.

Police have described him as an out-of-towner who was nevertheless known to his alleged victim.

Cliff was arrested in Big Springs, about 20km away from the crime scene, after allegedly fleeing the scene in a stolen car.

He was taken to hospital before being released into police custody.

The dead boy's classmates have been offered support.

"The school has organised counselling and support to be available today and for as long as required," a Department of Education spokesman said on behalf of their school.

Several students have shared their grief on Facebook, saying their friend was "gone way too soon".

"What's this town coming to," wondered local woman Claudette Martin, while Tania Springfield from the nearby town of Marrar labelled the death "another senseless act".

Investigators continued to comb a number of crime scenes on Wednesday, including the Acacia Street home where the boy's body was discovered.

Cliff is next due to face court on August 3.
