A gas cylinder has caught fire at Newington College in Stanmore. (9NEWS) 

A high school in Sydney's inner west has been evacuated as a precaution after a gas cylinder caught fire.

Students from Stanmore's Newington College were ushered away from buildings and onto a sporting field after the 9kg cylinder ignited at the Stanmore Road school.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews attended the school and have contained the fire. 

No students or staff are believed to have been injured in the incident.
