NSW Supreme Court Justice Michael Adams is set to lead the state's new police watchdog.

Police Minister Troy Grant on Friday named Justice Adams as the first chief commissioner of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

The LECC is to replace the Police Integrity Commission, the Police Division of the Office of the Ombudsman and the Inspector of the Crime Commission in an attempt to simplify law enforcement oversight.

It's not clear exactly when the LECC will commence operating with a government spokeswoman saying it will begin work when all key appointments are finalised.
