New laws for NSW cyclists explained

INCREASED FINES FOR CYCLISTS:

* $319 for not wearing a helmet (up from $71)

* $319 for holding on to a moving vehicle (up from $71)

* $425 for running a red light (up from $71)

* $425 for riding dangerously (up from $71)

* $425 for not stopping at children's/pedestrian crossings (up from $71)

* $106 for riding at night without lights (up from $71)

CHANGES FOR CYCLISTS:

* Anyone over 18 must carry photo ID or they will be fined $106 from March 1, 2017 when stopped for breaking road rules

* Give pedestrians at least one metre of space on shared paths

CHANGES FOR MOTORISTS:

* Drivers will be fined $319 and lose two demerit points if they don't give bike riders one metre of space when overtaking at 60km/h or less and 1.5 metres of space when overtaking at more than 60km/h.
