New Sydney deputy mayor to emulate Moore
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has a new deputy.
Jess Miller was elected as Deputy Lord Mayor at a City of Sydney meeting of councillors on Monday to replace Kerryn Phelps.
Professor Phelps' relationship with Ms Moore hadn't always been smooth sailing and a rift between the pair turned into open warfare in June when Prof Phelps quit Ms Moore's Independent team after backing her to a fourth mayoral term win last year.
Prof Phelps accused the party of not being "truly independent", citing the alleged resistance she encountered when seeking explanations about council expenses, including those for the mayor's office.
Ms Miller's previous council duties include deputy chair of the Environment Committee and the Cycling Advisory Committee.
"Clover doesn't take the easy route, but she always does what she believes in her heart is right. And that is something that I hope to emulate," she said in a statement on Tuesday.
According to the council's website, the Deputy Lord Mayor is elected each year by the city's councillors.
