A man has been charged with murder after security guards at a local shopping mall recognised him from a photo circulated by police.

The 36-year-old man has been charged over the discovery of a body in a wardrobe in the Illawarra region.

The decomposing body of Jade Cady, 36, was discovered by police after they were called to a New Dapto Rd apartment in Wollongong on Friday. Mr Cady's body was reportedly found covered in plastic bags.

Police said the body was in an advanced state of decomposition and indicated Mr Cady's death was "very clearly suspicious".

Inspector Jim Friday said the suspect was recognised in a local shopping mall.

"That person was recognised by security staff who informed detectives who then went to Church St ... and arrested that person," he told Macquarie Radio on Tuesday.

The man was refused bail to appear at Port Kembla Local Court on Tuesday.
