Mother of three-day-old boy left on Griffith doorstep found safe

The mother of a three-day-old boy left on the doorstep of a NSW home at the weekend has been found safe and well.

Residents discovered the newborn in a pink bassinet outside their front door in the Riverina town of Griffith just before midnight on Sunday after answering the doorbell.

With the boy was a note from his mother, the home owners said.

"Please look after him, he is beautiful, and I cannot look after him because I am only 14 years old … my parents will kill me," the note reportedly read.

Police launched a search for the baby's mother, holding grave fears for her welfare.

Investigators initially believed the mother was a teenager, but it is understood she is over the age of 18.

The woman attended Griffith Base Hospital shortly before midday on Tuesday, police say.

Officers were contacted and arrived a short time later.

Hospital staff and workers from the Department of Family and Community Services are now supporting the mother and child.

The baby, believed to have been born on Friday morning, is healthy and well, local health authorities say.

Police officers involved in the matter have issued a statement thanking the community for their assistance.

The incident has reignited public debate about introducing "drop-off boxes" at NSW hospitals to allow mothers to anonymously leave unwanted infants.
