Mother of Stephanie Scott's accused killer goes into hiding

The family of the man charged over the murder of NSW woman Stephanie Scott has reportedly gone into hiding, as the town of Leeton gathers to farewell the much-loved teacher and bride-to-be.

Vincent Stanford, 24, is accused of murdering Ms Scott on Easter Sunday, and dumping her body in the bush just days before she was due to get married.

Mr Stanford's mother, Anika, had a coffee with Leeton mayor Paul Maytom last week and said she was still in shock since her son's arrest, Fairfax Media reports.

Mrs Stanford and her eldest son, Luke, have gone into hiding at a local motel while the small town gathers for a private memorial at Eugowra, near the Scott family's hometown of Canowindra.

Mrs Stanford works as a nurse and moved to Leeton 14 months ago with two of her three adult sons.

She reportedly asked Cr Maytom to pass on her condolences to the families of Ms Scott and her fiancé Aaron Leeson-Woolley.

"Obviously, she herself is traumatised by this whole incident too," Cr Maytom said.

Cr Maytom said he would pass on the condolences if he felt it appropriate.

Ms Scott's private funeral is being held at the Eugowra function centre where the 26-year-old English and drama teacher was due to marry Mr Leeson-Woolley less than two weeks ago.

Shops and businesses in Leeton closed at 1pm so that locals could attend a public gathering in Mountford Park to coincide with the private funeral.

Mr Stanford is due to appear in court in June.
