Miscarriages recognised in NSW

NSW mothers who have suffered miscarriages are now able to obtain a certificate of recognition for their loss.

Previously, families weren't able to receive formal recognition of the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks.

The certificates, which will be free of charge, will be issued by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

"The recognition certificates are not legal documents but it is hoped that, at least in some small way, a formal recognition certificate will help," said Attorney-General Brad Hazzard.

The optional certificates are a "small but significant" way for families to have their loss acknowledged, said the president of the Australian College of Midwives, Caroline Homer.

"(It) may provide some comfort in what is a very difficult time," Professor Homer said in a statement.
