Bus driver charged over fatal NSW crash

The volunteer driver of an aged-care minibus has been charged over a crash that killed one elderly woman and injured several other passengers on a motorway south of Sydney.

The Warrigal Care minibus carrying 11 people was heading to a barbecue when it collided with a truck and rolled on its side on the Princes Motorway at Yallah just before midday on Wednesday.

An 88-year-old female passenger died at the scene.

Six passengers were transferred to Wollongong and Shellharbour hospitals while another was airlifted to Sydney's St George Hospital.

Most are either in a stable condition or have been discharged except for one 86-year-old woman at Wollongong hospital who is listed as serious but stable.

The 63-year-old bus driver has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and had his licence suspended, NSW Police said on Thursday.

He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Wollongong Local Court in early February.

Pictures of the accident on Wednesday showed the mangled roof at the back of the bus caved in by the force of the collision.

Warrigal chief executive Mark Sewell said the crash had been "very traumatic" for clients and staff.

"They spend a lot of time together, they often become close like family," Mr Sewell told AAP.

The organisation is standing by its process for selecting and training volunteer drivers, the chief executive said, and would help police with their inquiries.

Warrigal withdrew from hosting an Australia Day community walk at Wollongong Harbour out of respect for those affected by Wednesday's crash.
