Salim Mehajer faces new charges over 'further serious criminal activity'

Former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer could be charged with further offences in the electoral fraud case against him.

A crown prosecutor told a Downing Centre Local Court hearing that an investigation was under way in relation to apparently fraudulent documents.

Prosecutor Michelle England said evidence was still being obtained, but it appeared that "further serious criminal activity has been engaged in".

She said it wasn't clear who was responsible for the behaviour, but Mehajer's lawyer Tim Game SC told the court the investigation relates to his client.

The court also heard that seven others who had been accused alongside Mehajer - but whose charges were dropped - had been subpoenaed to give evidence in the case.

Mehajer and his sister Fatima were scheduled to face a two-week hearing from next Monday over accusations they used dozens of forged voter forms in the lead-up to the 2012 local government elections.

However, lawyers made a successful joint application on Tuesday to postpone the hearing.

Magistrate Alison Viney said she was persuaded mainly by an unspecified medical issue of Fatima Mehajer's, whom the court heard was 23 weeks' pregnant with twins.

A new hearing date is expected to be set when the case returns to court next Friday.
