Emergency crews restore power to 40,000 customers in Sydney's Sutherland shire after blackout

Power has been restored to around 40,000 customers after a blackout in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, in the city's south.

Energy provide Ausgrid said the outage was caused by a fault on a high-voltage power line supplying a major substation.

The issue has since been fixed and power gradually restored.  

Areas affected by the outage included Engadine, Sutherland, Gymea and Caringbah.

Shoppers at Westfield Miranda were also left in the dark. 

Sydney Trains warned delays were expected on services using the Illawarra Line, with limited or no lighting on station platforms.
