Man charged after Syd shooting in hospital

A man remains in a prison hospital two weeks after he was shot while allegedly trying to kill a police officer at a busy Sydney shopping mall.

Jerry Sourian, 23, had been expected to face Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday charged with four offences, including attempted murder of the officer.

According to court documents, Sourian was armed with a 25cm knife when he attempted to kill Leading Senior Constable Kate Gough at Westfield Hornsby, in Sydney's north, just before midday on June 9.

Sourian was shot by police as he allegedly lunged at the officer.

Three women shoppers were hit by police bullets and fragments as officers responded to the "life and death" situation.

A Royal North Shore Hospital spokeswoman told AAP on Wednesday that the women had asked for privacy while they recover.

The court heard Sourian remains in Sydney's Long Bay Jail hospital and documents say he is "unable to appear before court".

Lawyer Gary Anderson declined to comment on his client's condition.

The matter was adjourned to Central Local Court on July 7.

NSW Health is investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident as Sourian was a psychiatric patient released into the community on supervised leave at the time.
