A man faces multiple charges after a woman was allegedly detained against her will and beaten and choked at a home in NSW's Hunter region.

At about 8pm on Friday police attended a unit at Kurri Kurri on reports of a domestic violence incident and arrested a 36-year-old man.

Police allege that over a 12-hour period the man assaulted and choked his 39-year-old partner who suffered a number of injuries and bruises to her body, head and neck that required medical treatment.

The man has been charged with intentional and reckless choking, five counts of assault, assault with act of indecency, detaining a person with intent to obtain advantage occasioning actual bodily harm and contravening an AVO.

He was refused bail to appear before Maitland Local Court on Saturday.
