Sydney train delays have continued into the night after a man fell from a platform at a city station and became trapped.

Police say the man, aged in his 50s, had a medical episode and fell onto the tracks at Wynyard.

Paramedics were called shortly before 3.30pm on Monday and treated the man at the scene before he was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a critical condition.

He suffered foot injuries and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Trains were temporarily halted between Wynyard and North Sydney but are running again, Transport NSW says.

Passengers have been told to expect delays and allow extra travel time.
