Taxi prankster could face charges: police

NSW Police aren't laughing at a "shocking" prank where a man clings onto the back of a taxi and is dragged along a busy inner-Sydney road.

They want to see him at Redfern police station.

"He posed a significant risk not only to himself, but also other road users," Chief Inspector Phil Brooks told reporters on Tuesday.

The stunt, uploaded to social media on Monday night, shows the man grabbing the taxi's back bumper when it stops a red light in Redfern before being dragged about 100 metres, with the cab driver apparently oblivious.

The video has received more than 60 "likes" and is accompanied by the caption "full yolo".

"We need to do something before this young man does something far worse," Insp Brooks said.

The prankster avoided serious injury, but could face charges over the dangerous stunt.

Police say 291 people have lost their lives on NSW roads already this year - 36 more than this time last year.

"This young man could have quite easily added to this statistic," Insp Brooks said.

"This is dangerous and reckless behaviour."
