Fatal shooting in Sydney's west was 'targeted' attack: police

A fatal shooting in Sydney's west yesterday afternoon was a targeted attack, police say.

Around 4.35pm, a 22-year-old Greenacre man was shot near a children's playground in a park on Mulga Street in Punchbowl.

The man was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Acting Superintendent Glen Fitzgerald said the "brazen" attack occurred in daylight hours during school holidays.

"This was a daylight attack, it was out in the open, it was very visible to a lot of people who were in the area," Acting Superintendent Fitzgerald said.

He said the victim was known to police and a number of cars were seen leaving the area at the time.

"We believe it was targeted, they were there for a specific reason," he said.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Acting Superintendent Fitzgerald said it was too early in the investigation to know if the victim and the gunman had planned to meet at the park.
