A man will remain behind bars after he allegedly shot his stepmother in the head with a nail gun on Christmas evening.

Akaash Narayan, 20, had been having a domestic argument with his stepmother, Ragni, at their Bonnyrigg Heights home when he shot her twice in the head with the nail gun, NSW Police allege.

Paramedics treated Ms Narayan at the scene before taking her to Liverpool Hospital for emergency surgery.

Narayan fled the scene on foot but was arrested nearby in the early hours of the next morning as his stepmother lay in a critical condition.

He was charged with wounding with intent to murder and appeared at Parramatta Bail Court on Thursday.

His bail was formally refused and he was ordered to reappear at Fairfield Local Court on March 7.
