A man has been charged over a late night blaze that gutted two luxury yachts on Sydney Harbour.

The 40-foot vessels, worth $2.5 million, were moored at the exclusive Woolloomooloo Wharf when they were destroyed and sunk by a suspicious fire last month.

A 24-year-old man was arrested at Sydney International Airport on Tuesday night as he returned to Australia, police said.

He's been charged with maliciously destroying property by fire, was put on strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on September 8.
