A man whose handgun was linked to the daylight murder of former bikie boss Mahmoud "Mick" Hawi in Sydney's south will remain in prison.

Mr Hawi was shot as he got into his car outside a gym in Rockdale in mid-February 2018 and later died in hospital.

The alleged shooter ran from the scene before being driven away in a Mercedes-Benz, which was later found on fire nearby, police said at the time.

Both men then allegedly fled to Bexley in another car.

During investigations, detectives found a firearm in a garage allegedly used to store one of the getaway cars.

Jamal El Jaidi, 31, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with possessing a prohibited pistol.

He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused at Burwood Local Court on Thursday.

El Jaidi was ordered to appear at the same court again on March 6.
