A man has been charged with drink driving twice in just two hours and allegedly bolting from police on the NSW North Coast.

The 21-year-old was first nabbed after allegedly travelling at high speed through Coffs Harbour about midnight on Wednesday.

He was taken to the police station and stripped of his licence after allegedly blowing 0.135 blood alcohol concentration.

Just 90 minutes later his ute was spotted nearby, and the man allegedly again failed a breath test.

Police say the man was arrested but ran away while being placed in the police car.

Sniffer dogs helped catch him and he was also allegedly found carrying a small quantity of cannabis.

At the station, it's alleged the man again blew almost twice the legal blood alcohol limit.

He's been charged with two counts of mid-range drink driving, escaping custody, driving while suspended and possessing a prohibited drug.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on February 22.
