A 23-year-old man faces court in Sydney after a fight broke out at a university rugby union match at Macquarie Park.

Police say players began fighting during the match at midday on Saturday but were quickly separated by officials.

However, a man on the sidelines who had become involved in the brawl got a pair of scissors from a first aid kit and allegedly used them to threaten players.

Police say he let go of the scissors when bystanders attempted to calm him but then spat on a referee when he was asked to leave the grounds.

The man was arrested and charged with intent to commit an indictable offence and common assault and bailed to appear at Burwood Local Court on June 14.
