Sydney man arrested after test drive theft

A man who sparked a police pursuit after he allegedly stole a car he was test-driving has been arrested after a stand-off in the NSW Blue Mountains.

The man, 36, is accused of stealing the Holden Commodore in St Clair, in Sydney's west, on Monday after he asked the 56-year-old owner if he could take the wheel.

When the car's owner got out, the man locked the doors and took off.

Soon after police spotted the car and began pursuing it before breaking off due to safety concerns.

Early this morning police attended a house in Hope St, Blaxland where they attempted to arrest the man.

He allegedly locked himself inside the house and refused to come out.

The man later surrendered to police and was taken to Penrith Police Station.

He has been charged with a number of offences, including stealing, larceny, sparking a police pursuit, driving recklessly and stealing a motor vehicle.

He's been refused bail to appear in Penrith Local Court on October 16.
