LSD linked to Nimbin backpackers' rampage

Two Gold Coast men allegedly high on LSD face charges over a rampage at a backpackers' hostel in the NSW hippie town of Nimbin where a man was stabbed and a police officer punched in the face.

A 20-year-old man allegedly stabbed a 38-year-old man in the back several times at the Cullen Street hostel about 4am on Saturday.

Police allege he then damaged a car and a number of rooms in the hostel before fleeing into a paddock where officers used capsicum spray in order to arrest him.

Another man, aged 19, allegedly assaulted a 43-year-old woman and punched a female police officer in the nose as he fled the hostel.

He was found lying naked on a car and arrested at the scene.

Both men are believed to have taken LSD and have each been charged with a string of offences including assault and malicious damage.

They have been granted conditional bail and are due to face Lismore Local Court in April.

"The incident on the weekend is a concern and shows the violent effects illicit substances can have on those who take them," Detective Inspector Cameron Lindsay said in a statement.

"LSD and similar drugs are illegal for a reason. The contents of those drugs are often unknown, and even the smallest amount can cause serious injury and even death."
