Lindt Cafe victims memorial 'progressing'

Two-and-a-half years after Sydney's Martin Place was covered in a sea of flowers following the deadly Lindt Cafe siege, a permanent memorial is still in the pipeline.

"Design work on the Martin Place memorial is progressing," a spokesperson from the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet said in a statement on Monday.

Former premier Mike Baird unveiled the memorial design in December 2015, one year after gunman Man Haron Monis trapped 18 hostages and executed cafe manager Tori Johnson.

Hostage Katrina Dawson, a barrister and mother of three, was fatally wounded in the crossfire when police stormed the cafe 17 hours after the December 2014 siege started.

Inspired by the floral tributes left in Martin Place following the siege, the permanent memorial is set to feature hundreds of colourful flowers in cubes in a scattered starburst pattern along the pavement.

"The Department will continue to speak with the families of Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson regarding the next phase of the memorial design," the spokesperson said, two days before the findings into the siege are due to be delivered.

"The focus remains on creating a lasting memorial that will honour the memories of Tori and Katrina."

NSW coroner Michael Barnes will on Wednesday hand down his findings on how authorities handled the deadly siege.
