Last beam placed on Barangaroo South tower

Sydney's skyline has welcomed a new player with the last beam put down on the final tower being built at Barangaroo South.

The 39-storey Third Tower will house the headquarters of its developer, Lend Lease, as well as employees from auditor giant KPMG when it opens in mid-2016.

With two other commercial towers being built at the site, Barangaroo South has been pitched as Sydney's next financial services hub.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said the development was "putting Sydney on the map".

"This rivals (London's) Canary Wharf. Indeed it's better because we have Sydney Harbour and they have the Thames River," he said at the tower's topping out ceremony on Tuesday.

Billionaire James Packer's Crown Group also plans to build a luxury six-star hotel and VIP-only casino at the 7.6-hectare site.

Premier Baird said the planning department was in the "final stages" of making a decision on the casino tender.
