Double murderer Bruce Burrell has died while serving a life sentence for killing Sydney women Kerry Whelan and Dorothy Davis in the 1990s.

The 63-year-old died in Sydney's Prince of Wales hospital early on Thursday morning from natural causes, NSW Corrective Services said.

Burrell was jailed for life in 2006 for the kidnapping and murder of 39-year-old mother Kerry Whelan, whom he abducted from a Parramatta hotel car park in 1997.

In 2007, he was also found guilty of the 1995 murder of family friend, wealthy 74-year-old widow Dorothy Davis, for which he received a minimum 21 years jail sentence.

Burrell had been a friend of both victims' families, and money had been the motive for the murders, prosecutors said.

His death will come as little comfort to his victims' families who to this day don't know where their loved ones' bodies lie.

It's believed Burrell disposed of the bodies at his rural property near Belanglo State Forest in the NSW southern highlands.
