The jury has begun deliberating at the trial of a man accused of attempted murder after his friend was maimed when a parcel bomb exploded at his Sydney home 19 years ago.

Roberto Saenz de Heredia, 48, pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder Brett Boyd, who lost a thumb and an eye and suffered head injuries in June 1998 after a parcel addressed to his girlfriend Simone Cheung exploded at their Belrose home.

The District Court jury, which was told Mr Boyd died a decade later, retired on Friday afternoon.
