Jury retires at Sydney axe attacks trial

A jury has begun deliberations at the NSW trial of a woman accused of attempted murder over her axe attacks on two strangers in a Sydney convenience store.

Evie Amati, 26, has pleaded not guilty to wounding Benjamin Rimmer and Sharon Hacker with intent to murder at the Enmore 7-Eleven and attempting to wound pedestrian Shane Redwood with intent to murder in the early hours of January 7, 2017.

Her lawyer has contended that while her body had carried out the axe attacks, the jury had to consider her mental state at the time.

He said she was suffering from a mental derangement from an underlying disorder triggered by drugs.

But the prosecutor said Amati had not proved she was experiencing a psychosis at the time, submitting that the transgender woman was driven by a deep-seated anger at the world and people.

She believed people were repulsed by her because she was transgender and took her anger out while disinhibited by drugs and alcohol.

The NSW District Court jurors retired on Wednesday after Judge Mark Williams gave them his legal directions.
