Jury deliberates in wife smothering trial

A jury is continuing deliberations at the trial of a man accused of murdering his wife of four decades in Sydney.

Warren Francis Rogers, 70, has pleaded not guilty to the murder but guilty to the manslaughter of Anne Rogers, 61, who died when she was smothered with a pillow in a bedroom of their Milperra home in September 2016.

Crown prosecutor Nanette Williams submitted Rogers became "jealous and angry" when his wife continued "against his wishes" to have contact with her childhood friend, Jeff Langham, after a brief separation.

The prosecutor said "hand-in-hand" with that was Rogers' desire to maintain control of the family's finances.

Defence barrister Richard Pontello has asked the jury to consider the defence of substantial impairment by abnormality of mind, as Rogers became "very depressed" after learning of his wife's extramarital relationship.

The jury retired on Friday to consider its verdict at the NSW Supreme Court trial before Justice Julia Lonergan.
