Mum cleared of assault but faces retrial

A young Sydney mother has been cleared of assaulting her toddler, but the jury could not reach a verdict on a second charge.

The now 23-year-old woman, who can't be named, has pleaded not guilty to assaulting the 18-month-old girl occasioning her actual bodily harm on February 22, 2015.

The mother told police she found her daughter, who sustained a spiral fracture on her arm, suspended "in mid-air" wedged between her cot and bedroom wall.

The NSW District Court jury was discharged on Friday after failing to reach a verdict.

But the jurors found her not guilty of causing her daughter grievous bodily harm with intent sometime between her birth in August 2013 and February 2015.

Injuries including a displaced skull fracture were found after she was treated for the arm fracture.

She is expected to face a retrial on the February 22 charge.
