Globetrotting knights in shining armour are descending on Sydney as they prepare to go toe-to-toe at an annual medieval fair.

Now in its fourth-year, the St Ives fair packs in a bevy of old world activities including cannon firing, archery and birds of prey demonstrations.

But it's the highly anticipated jousting tournament which keeps the punters coming back.

Medieval enthusiasts from around the globe compete in the ancient sport which features real steel and solid wood lances.

Professional armourer Luke Binks has been jousting for more than 15 years and competed in a dozen countries.

"The tournament at St Ives is really the pinnacle of what we do," Mr Binks told AAP.

"We train really hard throughout the year mainly for one or two events of this calibre."

The event will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
