Journalism loses with cuts: NSW premier

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has thrown her support behind Fairfax Media journalists after the company announced 125 jobs were to be slashed from metropolitan newsrooms.

"My heart goes out to those people who were told today they (may) no longer have jobs," the premier said during her first appearance at the National Press Club in Sydney on Wednesday.

"It is a difficult pill to swallow, especially because I'm someone who respects true journalism, the art of journalism. I don't want us to lose that."

The changing media landscape and 24-hour news cycle had also impacted on politics, Ms Berejiklian said.

"It's not easy, we are all negotiating these changing times as best we can."

Press club president Chris Uhlmann on Wednesday described Fairfax's Sydney Morning Herald newspaper as one of the great mastheads of the nation - and the world.

"We are all disappointed to hear about the job losses at Fairfax today," the ABC journalist said after Ms Berejiklian's speech.
