A NSW parliamentary inquiry has been launched into the state's "dirtiest jail" following widespread allegations of corruption and drug trafficking.

An inquiry into Sydney's Parklea Correctional Centre, introduced by the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party and supported by Labor and the Greens, was passed in the NSW upper house on Thursday morning.

The inquiry will investigate the adequacy of staffing, the inflow of contraband and the general security of the privately managed prison after claims by prisoners that drug smuggling was rife in the facility.
