Husar, BuzzFeed to have mediation talks

Federal MP Emma Husar will enter mediation with Buzzfeed before her defamation case against the publisher proceeds.

Ms Husar is suing BuzzFeed Australia, its American parent company BuzzFeed Inc and journalist Alice Workman.

The western Sydney MP says she was defamed in an article, a tweet and a Facebook post in August outlining misconduct allegations made against her and examined as part of a confidential internal Labor investigation.

The ALP inquiry found Ms Husar had mistreated her electorate staff but did not find evidence to support claims of sexual harassment or that she'd flashed another federal MP.

In the Federal Court in Sydney on Friday, Justice Steven Rares set down a timetable for the parties to file their outlines of evidence before mediation in June.

When they later return to court, they'll either be setting a date for hearing "or it won't be going on", he said.

The judge previously encouraged the parties to consider mediation, warning in February they faced a complicated and expensive case that could cause "a whole lot of collateral damage".

BuzzFeed on Friday said it "stands by its reporting about Emma Husar's workplace conduct and will defend the matter at trial if necessary".

Ms Husar said she welcomed the agreement on mediation and would participate in the process fully and in good faith.
