A Sydney hair salon owner has been accused of underpaying a teenage apprentice in her first job by more than $14,000.

The Fair Work Ombudsman is taking legal action against Jakoub Abboud, the former operator of the Hair-Rass Me salon at the Westfield Penrith shopping centre, for allegedly underpaying an employee $14,507 between July 2015 and July 2016 when she was aged between 15 and 17.

The matter is listed for a directions hearing in the Federal Circuit Court in Sydney on August 2.
