Gunshot victim recovers in Sydney hospital

Police are waiting to speak to the victim of a shooting who was spotted in the front of a ute during a random breath test operation in Sydney's west.

Detectives are working to establish whether the 27-year-old man may have been shot in a public car park in Petersham following reports of a single gunshot being fired early on Sunday morning.

Around half an hour later, highway patrol officers spotted the injured man in the passenger seat of a ute which had been pulled over for an RBT in Merrylands.

The man is recovering in Westmead Hospital with a gunshot wound to his groin and stomach.
