Greens' firearm claims false: NSW Shooters

The NSW Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party have accused the Greens of exploiting the 20th anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre to make "false" claims about Australian firearm laws.

Greens NSW leader David Shoebridge on Wednesday urged the government to close a number of "loopholes" in current legislation, including section 6B of the Firearms Act that allows the use of a firearm at an approved shooting range without a licence or permit.

Gunman Martin Bryant fatally shot 35 people at the historic Tasmanian site of Port Arthur on April 28, 1996.

Mr Shoebridge said politicians should use the anniversary of the tragedy to reflect on gun law reforms and amend legislation, placing "community safety ahead of the interest of the gun lobby".

But NSW Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MP Robert Brown says the timing of the push is disrespectful.

"What happened on that day was the result of a madman's actions and has been used to stigmatise farmers, hunters and shooters ever since," he said in a statement.

Mr Brown said the claims failed "to account for the sensitivities of all those affected".

"These people are forced to relive the trauma because the Greens want a headline," he said.

The minor party were however accused of doing exactly the same thing last week, reigniting the gun law debate with calls for an inquiry into the massacre.

NSW Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MP Robert Borsak on Sunday said a royal commission into the 1996 tragedy would allow those involved "a chance at closure", adding that criminals were the problem, not guns.

"Greater than 97 per cent of all firearm-related incidents reported relate to unregistered, unbranded, unlicensed firearms," he said.
