A drunk-driver caught leaving a NSW pub on St Patrick's Day in a golf buggy blew twice the legal blood alcohol limit.

Police stopped the motorised golf cart on a public road in the NSW rural town Deniliquin just before 10pm because they wrongly suspected the cart was stolen after a spate of recent thefts from the local golf club.

Police say the 53-year-old recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.145 and was charged with drink-driving.
