Fresh bid to catch NSW mail plane robbers

Police are making a renewed effort to catch two men who held up a mail delivery plane in northwest NSW nearly two decades ago.

The men, armed with shotguns, drove on to the runway at Brewarrina Airport in a stolen white Commodore just after the mail delivery plane landed on January 20, 2000, police say.

They handcuffed the male pilot and two female couriers to a fence before stealing packages from the plane and speeding away in the Commodore.

The car was later found on fire 40km south of Brewarrina, with emergency workers noticing that roadside posts had been flattened or removed and blue markers lined the road, suggesting it had been prepared as a makeshift landing strip.

The duo was never found and NSW detectives have established Strike Force Leaburn in a bid to identify them, releasing a series of images relevant to the probe. They're appealing for anyone who has information to contact police.
