Four-wheel-drive washed down stream after owner misjudges creek's depth

A group of four-wheel-driving enthusiasts were forced to stage a rescue after the lead car in their convoy misjudged how deep a raging creek was before attempting to traverse it.

The driver of a white Toyota FJ Cruiser was left stranded after becoming bogged down when he tried to cross a swollen creek in Sunny Corner, in the NSW central west.

One of the members of the convoy filmed as recovery efforts to save the car were underway.

Two men attempted to tie a strap from a nearby tree to the back of the four-wheel-drive.

"Man that is deep," one onlooker can be heard saying.

By the time straps had been fastened to both ends of the car, the rushing water had already washed away one of the rescuers.

The washed-away man was seen clinging to the creek bank. The water then overcomes the vehicle and washes it down stream.

"Get out! Get out!" the men watching from the creek bank scream at the car's driver, who is still inside his four-wheel-drive.

The driver did eventually get out of the car and one of the onlookers later took to Facebook to reveal the car's fate.

"Car has been snatched to tree and left there," Denis Matijevic wrote.

"Owners went back today and saw a group of people trying to cross same spot. Even after people saw the car and heard the story they thought they could go until common sense prevailed."

The car's owner had been a four-wheel-driving enthusiast for 25 years, according to Mr Matijevic.
