Four teens charged after 'damaging police car' in Newcastle

Four teenage boys have been charged after allegedly damaging a police van in Newcastle last night.

Police were called to complaints about the behaviour of a group of youths in Hanbury Street in Mayfield shortly before midnight.

Officers engaged in a foot pursuit on Maitland Road and arrested the teenagers - two boys aged 14 and another two aged 16.

9NEWS has obtained video which appears to show a group of boys damaging the van. 

In the video, one boy allegedly throws a child's pram into the police vehicle's window, sending glass spilling onto the street.

Witnesses said the violence began after a group of teenagers was asked by police to move on from a nearby house party. 

The four arrested teens were taken to Newcastle City Police Station and have since been charged with destroying and damaging property in company.
