Cop won't be probed over Sydney cab arrest

The officer who used a baton to restrain an arrested Sydney woman will not be investigated by NSW police.

Police say the officer used reasonable force after a review of CCTV footage showed the arrested woman punched a female officer in the face in an unprovoked attack.

The woman and three men have been arrested on a number of charges including assaulting a police officer and affray, following the Potts Point incident in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The flare up began when one of the men allegedly punched a cab driver over a surcharge fee, before the driver flagged down a passing police car on Bayswater Rd.

"Some of the group became aggressive towards the police, with one woman punching a female police officer to the mouth," said Superintendent Michael Fitzgerald on Thursday.

He said the group also attacked a passer-by who tried to assist the officers.

"Police are not punching bags, neither are taxi drivers, and neither are members of the public who come to aid police," Supt Fitzgerald said.

A Facebook video of the arrest has been viewed more than 625,000 times.

Supt Fitzgerald has seen the video and says the group is entitled to lodge a complaint if it believes it was treated with unreasonable force.

If it did complain, the matter would be investigated independently by the NSW Ombudsman, he said.
