Former NSW premier Thomas "Tom" Lewis will be laid to rest at a state funeral service in Sydney's CBD.

Mr Lewis, who founded the National Parks and Wildlife Service of NSW, served as the state's premier between 1975 and 1976 and he represented Wollondilly for more than 20 years.

The Australian and NSW flags will be flown at half mast on Thursday and family and friends will gather for the funeral at St Stephen's Uniting Church at 10.30am.
