Police warn of Sydney child predator

A man who made sexual comments to a teenage girl in a Sydney park has been linked to the indecent assault of a five-year-old girl the following day.

The man, only described as being about 30, has not been located since the incidents on Saturday and Sunday and police fear there could be other victims.

A 14-year-old girl was approached by the man about 7pm on Saturday in Wiley Park, in the suburb of the same name.

He tried to engage her with sexual comments but she fled the park.

"The comments were of a serious sexual nature and ones which would leave you with no other option but to conclude that this male had very sinister intentions around his attendance at the park on Saturday and further on Sunday," Supt McLean said.

On Sunday afternoon a man approached a group of children, aged between five and 10, who were playing in the driveway of a unit block in Denman Avenue, Wiley Park.

Police believe the man initially asked to join the game, and engaged with the children for a period of time before leading a five-year-old girl behind a building in the same unit block, where he indecently assaulted her.

Detectives are still interviewing all the children to build a description of the man.

He is believed to either live locally or frequent the area.

Supt McLean described the man as "very convincing" in what he said to get the younger girl to walk away with him but would not reveal the comments, which now form part of the investigation.

He said there was potential for the man's behaviour to continue or progress to something more serious.

"On the basis of his interaction with those children we're quite satisfied he has at least committed one indecent assault on one young child and I'm concerned that the potential for further incidents on those particular days was quite likely," Supt McLean said.

"As with any sex offender, I am satisfied that this male was in those locations and engaging with those children for the simple purpose of his own sexual gratification."

Supt McLean has urged parents and children to remain vigilant, but to be sensible and not overreact.

He praised the actions of the older girl, describing her decision to flee when the man tried to engage with her as "brilliant".

"She's safe today because of the actions she took," he said.

The children have been offered counselling.
