First NSW road death for Easter period

NSW has recorded its first road fatality within hours of the start of a police operation to reduce road deaths over the Easter period.

The man died following a head-on collision between two heavy vehicles on the Riverina Highway, about 15km east of Deniliquin, just before 2.40am on Thursday.

One of the drivers, a 34-year-old man, suffered burns and internal injuries and is being transferred to Melbourne Hospital.

The second man, who hasn't been identified, died on arrival at Deniliquin Hospital.

Operation Tortoise, which started at midnight and ends at 11.59pm on Monday, is targeting speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, not wearing a seatbelt and riding without a helmet, with double demerit point in effect.

Also on Thursday, a 19-year-old P-plater was allegedly caught driving a ute at double the speed limit about 7am in Sydney's west.

Officers detected the ute travelling at 128km/h in a 60km/h zone on Chandos Road, Horsley Park.

The licence plates were confiscated for three months and the man's driver's licence was suspended for six months.
