Family escape fire which destroys garage

A family of four have escaped an intense blaze that destroyed their six-car garage in western Sydney.

Firefighters were called to the Merrylands home in the early hours of Monday, Fire and Rescue Superintendent Paul Johnstone told AAP.

Four people escaped from the home while their neighbours were also evacuated as firefighters worked for about five hours to extinguish the blaze.

The garage was completely destroyed in the fire, which isn't being treated as suspicious, but firefighters managed to save the home.
